In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war, and in its hidden corners there is only blackness, agony and death.

This is the truth that was realized by the former brothers of the Shining legion, a proud chapter of Space Marines charged with defending the Ghoul Stars of the Ultima Segementum. In the first centuries after their inception, the Shining Legion fought bravely against the continuous raids of the piratical Dark Eldar, and turned the green tide of Waaaagggh! Grimgit before it could sweep through the Alitar System.

But nothing can shine forever.

During the defense of the Dorinius Cluster, at the very edge of the Ghoul Stars, the 3rd battle company of the Shining Legion came face to face with the emissaries of the Ruinous Powers, and their legendary exploits came to a shuddering end.

A band of Chaos Worshippers calling themselves The Cult of Neverending Night had insinuated themselves into the power structure of the Dorinius Cluster's primary administrative worlds. Preaching the inevitable consumption of the galaxy by the darkness of the inter-galactic void and the coming of the time when all the stars would die, their apocalyptic cult fed on the unconscious fear of the local populous.

By the time the 3rd had fought their way to the Dorinius Primus, the seat of the Neverending Night's power, its leaders had already recognized their imminent defeat at the hands of the space marines. But, despite their loss, they knew that night would eventually fall. And so they wove a dark sorcery throughout the capital city, beseaching each of the chaos powers in turn for their favour, finally entreating Father Nurgle, the Lord of Entropy and Decay, the bless their horrendous endeavour.

The Shining Legion Space Marines made landfall on Dorinius Primus by drop pod assault. Their attack was brutal and swift, taking the city with minimal casualties. However, as 3rd Company Captain Garion Devor made lead his command squad into the inner sanctum of the Cult, the doom of the chapter was sealed.

Suddenly every loyal imperial citizen on Dorinius Primus was visited by visions of the Galaxy in all its glory, shining in the darkness of the void. No marine was spared the awe inspiring brightness it. But then, to the horror of all, the stars darkened, one by one. Slowly at first, then faster and faster, and each member of the Legion despaired to see an all consuming darkness grip the Emperor's holy realm. And finally, each was granted a last vision of Sol, its warm glow cradling Earth darken, and then die. Darkness, entropy, emptiness.

And then the vision was gone.

Days later the 3rd Company left Dorinius to return to their chapter keep at Horod IV. The voyage home was sullen, and their fervour with which the warriors had once lived their lives was gone. Instead, a brooding anger seemed to permiate the hull of their ship...

In the following months, the attitude brought back by the 3rd slowly insinuated itself into the rest of the chapter. Fights broke out between brothers, and more and more often battle brothers would be found sitting in their quarters in complete darkness, whispering strange words to themselves.

One year after the return of Garion and his marines, as Horod's sun's last rays sank below the horizon, all lights in the Chapter Fortress went black. each of the company chaplains was murdered in the dark by his former brothers. Garion himself went to the arming chamber of Chapter Master Verdigan and in the absolute darkness of the starless, Horodian night, murdered him.

In the following months, the Ghoul Stars were plagued by lightning-fast raids by cloacked space marines clad in black and grey. After leaving a swath of destruction, they would just as quickly depart, leaving in their wake utter despair and an obsidian monument covered in strange symbols that seemed to absorb all light. Soon after, the survivors would be struck by terrible visions of the end of all light in the galaxy...

The Shining Legion had become the Emissaries of Night, led by their Dark Lord Garion. Instead of bringing the light of the Emperor, they now spread darkness and despair throughout the Galaxy, leaving their cursed monuments behind them as testiments to the inevitability of utter darkness.

The Emissaries of Night wear pre-dominantly black/dark grey armour with a lighter grey trim. They adorn themselves with skull-imagery as a symbol of unavoidable death and decay as well as hour-glasses to represent the inescapable nature of the coming dark. Their chapter symbol is a black skull eclipsing a burning sun.

The Chapter is lead by The Dark Lord Garion and the Dark Captains of each of the 7 companies that still exist. Some squads have given to the worship of Nurgle in his role of the Lord of Entropy and Decay. Other than this, the Emissaries do not seem to worship chaos, and do not tend to summon daemons. However, Some witnesses also claim to have seen plague-ridden marines capable of absorbing ungodly amounts of punishment accompanying the Emissaries.

Their combat doctrine is based on their roots in the Codex Asartes but altered to represent their preference for quick and sudden raids. This means they tend to have several 10-man squads mounted in rhinos supported by squads equipped with jump packs, or squads equipped with multiple assault weapons. In larger engagements Terminators will often deepstrike in to seize objectives, create havoc, and set the monuments of Darkness, then return to the battle barges and strike cruisers in preparation for another raid.

Warcry: "Submit to the Dark!"
