So MEPAcon is fast approaching and I was thinking back to last Spring's con. It was Friday night and I had sat down to a session of Dungeons OR Dragons - an event where the group of Arks gets to choose if they want to explore a dungeon or face a dragon. I was joined as a player by a group of 4-5 gamers who all usually gamed together.

We breezed through the first encounter but ran into trouble with the second. We were facing a giant and his two pet "nettle firing lizard creatures". Truth be told, I have no idea what these things are but I've faced them many times playing WEGS with Wegzo and they are nasty. Their open mouth has a three part jaw (sort of like the creatures from Tremors) and they shoot a cloud of nettles.

I was playing an Elf Mage and there was also a Warrior in the group. As for the rest of the Arks? I have no idea - after one volley of nettles, they all turned tail and ran, leaving the warrior and me to face them down alone. Wounds, Spoints and Phews! were flying but by the end of the game session the giant and his nettle spitters laid dead on the mat and the warrior and I limped off to the tavern to ridicule his friends for fleeing!

So what's your favorite WEGS experience?

The two WEGS games I remember were both from Origins (a few years ago I think).

One was A Dwarf Walks In. There were around 8 players (maybe as many as 10) and two of us were playing Gnobbit Tricksters. The group was pretty disorganized and the dwarf recruited the two Gnobbits to help steal the sword and split the loot 3-ways. We ran out of time but it was a lot of fun (basically three-way pretending to be two-way fighting, backstabbing, and vying for the sword).

The other one was a scenario where we played whatever Ark we wanted and got one random spell. I don't think I ever used my spell (and don't even remember what Ark I was playing - it was before I'd discovered Gnobbit Tricksters). We were basically at a school to learn spellcraft and went into a swamp. The final encounter was a giant guy with a cleaver (think he was the cook at the school or something) and Wegzo basically said we should avoid him and it would be very hard to win against him so, of course, most of us (1-2 ran away) attacked him - again, I think we ran out of time but we had him almost dead by the end.

Whoo...there are so many memories!

There's my first EVER WEGS game, played at WittCon III. I played a Dwarf Ranger that time around, with next to no mobility, as we attempted to dash across the board, escaping from some vicious beastie that dashed back and forth, taking us out piece by piece. Parting Shot was my friend that day!

I remember the Giant WEGS game to cap off WittCon V, with something like the 9 of us around the table, and Wegzo, Willy the 2, and Ebbs tossing down monsters like candy...and the great Tentacle-Dragon getting stuck in triple LAP, thanks to Willy the 2's awful dice luck.

Of course, there was Ebbs' first shot at running WEGS. We gave him half an hour to prep "Dwarf Walks...', while we ran to Meijer for gamer chow. That was the first appearance of the long series of Nordlings!

Then, there's always the Midnight Madness game at Origins last year, with Weggers from all points showing up--TTG folks, Witt-Weggers, and more...facing down KlattaBarraBoo without the benefit of the Holy Hand Grenade!

But there's also the demos that we've run out here, like the playtest of Hobgobbles' Eve (featuring Grammy HobGob in bondage gear, and her pet wolf Fifi!), and "Return to Castle VonYum-ensteinovich IVC--Part 6, the Revengening! (a prequel). Yum-enstein netted us some sure stares of madness over at Wright State Univ., with all the candy pieces on the game mat!

Running the first playtests of WEGS SuperZ, too, was something else. "The Terrible Island of Doctor Crab-Clops" may never be the same...

I tried wegs last year at origins when it had been recommended like a billion times by Kain.

I'm glad I tried it but for the most part I found the combination of poker chips and betting components unnecessary. I DID enjoy the low volume of rules that seemed to keep the character sheet clutter free. It's a game I would like to try again to get a more full experience, but if I had to currently rate it, it's not great but not awful and terrible.

Lots of good times, and hope for many more!

There have been some classic Dwarf Walks moments, time and time again. I just love running that one. Players do unexpected things every time it is run.

I think the most unbelievable moment for me was in a game called The Yawlwyrd. Game went on for four hours and by last inning, all Arks were blowing Phew! against a massive demon lord named Macabrius. On the final action of the game, a warrior managed to take one last swipe at the demon, but delivered only 4% NDE. The demon rolled 04.

Someday we can all sit around on the front porch of the Old Gamers Retirement Home and recall the glory days of 2d6 + 2d10 (and then take out our teeth and go to bed...).

Wilcoxon - that's Pigskab's Skewl 4 Wizards. That's a blast, too, but we've pulled it from the con circuit. The additional layer of making everyone a spellcaster is fun, but for general convention play puts some complication into the game. Toegash was the Ogre Chef's name...

Ah, now that's the stuff legends are made of!

Wilcoxon - sounds like there were double crosses and triple crosses flying at that session of Dwarf Walks. With all I've played of WEGS in the past year, I still haven't played or run that one yet.

PlatinumWarlock - ah, yes, Willy the 2's awful blue dice . . . they saved me many a time! I think I was rolling their cousins at Dreamation as I finished out two events with my Master Minion in each going into LAP on an INV% of 00!

Anyone else with some good table stories to share?
