In my long and tattered career as a gamer, I have collected many RPGs. Most were just for the setting. In fact, for a lot of them the system seemed like an afterthought. I love many of these settings, but the idea of trying to run a game with their system makes me cringe. So I was wondering what other gamers might suggest in terms of a system that I can convert them to. I will say up front that D20 is not even a consideration at this point. Also, I have heard about GURPS, but I don't have any experience with it to know how well it might or might not work.

I haven't checked this system out but you could look into the Unisystem from Eden Studios.

I've never played GURPS either, but I'm pretty sure they have a free version on their website for download. It seems somewhat complicated, but very adaptable. Also seems pretty popular, so there must be some merit to the system ;)

At Origins last year, we played in a GURPS version of SPANC (based heavily on the card game by Steve Jackson Games)
The game system worked really well for a one-off adventure, but I am not sure how the experience stuff worked.
Basically everything is a % roll. Combat is fluid and pretty simple to understand. I could see pretty much any setting working in a GURPS system. They even offer "Generic" books that help with Tech Levels. I got "Ultra-Tech" for the game we played in, and it covers everything from power armor to super-laser-rocket-machine guns!

There's the HERO system as well, although there's a bit o'math. Hmmm, what else... not too much that I can think of. I mean RIFTS is all one setting, but has TONS and TONS of options for what to play, but not too many generics because GURPS is kinda the gold standard.

Thanks for the feedback, everybody. I don't think I will go with HERO. If I wanted to do math, I would just pull out Rolemaster and Spacemaster. Unisystem sounds interesting and I will need to look into it more. However, since all of their rules are for particular settings, I worry I may find it difficult to adapt it for my own purposes. GURPS sounds like it would be the easiest to adapt to, though I may need to get a few sourcebooks to cover all of the settings. I did pick up an old copy of the GURPS rules, but it is for Third Edition (well, it only cost $1). At least I can get a feel for the system that way.

I'm a GURPS head as well, but my interest really started with all the sourcebooks available, and with the Transhuman Space books the system pulled me in. The system is very crunchy and a bit daunting when you look at all the 4th edition books. But most of everything you need is here: http://e23.sjgames.com/item.html?id=SJG31-0004 in GURPS lite (a free download). I do use Character Assistant to help generate characters and I'm currently using it to try to create stats for characters based in the Infinity miniatures game universe.

This response may come a bit late, but have you looked at Savage Worlds? The rules are fairly easy and quick playing... leaving more room for role playing than for 2 hour d20-esque combats. You can download the Test Drive rules on their unwieldly website (http://www.peginc.com/archives/category/savage-worlds/), and the current rendition of the rulebook is only $10 (small-ish book, paperback, but full color). It's definitely worth a look-see.
