Carrion Crawler!

Another classic monster to wegzify!

Carrion Crawler

Minion Level: Any, but usually 4/44 to 6/66.
Size: ML SQR long (a 4/44 is 4 SQR long).
Arketype: Trickster (Warrior+Ranger).

Special Actions

Strength+: Move +4
Due to its many legs, it has a heightened Move. This creature can crawl easily on floor/wall/ceiling. It can hold fast to any surface thanks to its sharp claws.

Trick Attack: Tentacles
Number of attacks per inning: d6+2
The head of the beast has eight tentacles. Each tentacle can strike up to 2 SQR away from the head. These attacks are STL% based. Thus, the creature is best when a Trickster. The tentacles cause (d6+ML) wounds, but each strike can cause paralysis to opponent. Opponents must Resist Poison before the next Spante or suffer the consequences: one Lost Action Phase for each tentacle strike! Suffering 4 tentacle strikes will yield 4 LAPs for the unfortunate soul hit!

SRO Invulnerability Penalty
The carrion crawler has no true ARM% and relies on sheer Stealth Rank only (SRO) for INV% tests. The STLr can be derived via (INI Roll + 30 + ML). If the beast is not a Trickster, the +30 is only +20 (standard Rank bonus).

I think this sucker will make an adventuring party stay away!

But what if I don't have Resist Poison as a skill?
cry

A single successful Resist Poison will nullify all strikes if effected before the next Spante. If this fails, the Ark suffers a total number of LAPs equal to the strike count. If you are hit 4 times, you get 4 LAPs. And you have to roll out of each one independently!

If you don't have Resist Poison, you can still take the roll hoping for a Wicked Success, or a score that is equal to or less than your Move Strength score. This is similar to saving throws, but not covered in WEGS 101 Old Skool. An Ark's Strengths scores are their automatic ranges for any of the Resist Tests - even if they don't have the skill in their hand!

Additionally, if the Ark concentrates their full action on this roll (i.e. take NO other action), they can sink in spoints to increase their base Strength range. Each spoint gets them +5% bonus. However, they are limited by the Strength itself as to the number of spoints expendable (spi).

The end result is this:

If an Ark is struck by the crawler four times, they have until the next Spante to counter the group paralysis with a Resist Poison or a STL SRT (Stealth Strength Resist Test).

If they previously acted, they can't apply spoint bonus to this test - and the test causes a Skill Free Inning (standard penalty for SRT / Reaction skill use).

This is def advanced WEGS play...

Never know where the Friday Roll will lead!

So the Resist Poison roll is an all or nothing affair? In other words, if an Ark is hit three times he makes one Resist Poison roll before the next Spante and suffers either 3 LAPS or no LAPS?

Almost feels bad for the Arks that run into this beastie . . . almost

Yup - the Resist Poison or Strength Resistance Test will wipe out ALL initial LAPS, but only if done before the first Spante. After that, each LAP has to be rolled out of independently.

So, if Bilgo the Gnobbit Trickster is hit for 5 strikes, he has to use his Resist Poison before the inning ends. Success means that he has avoided all LAPs. Failure means he's going down with 5 LAPs!!!

On his next action, he can roll the Frozen Roll, test his Resist Skill or take an SRT. This removes one of the LAPs - not all (as the initial test would).

The power of the carrion crawler is to paralyze. It is not an awesome warrior (low damage, low INV%). Additionally, the random number of attacks does not insure a high hit count.

Despite all these weaknesses, these critters should best be avoided...
