From page 174 of the AD&D Dungeon Masters Guide (1979), the awesomely named Dungeon Random Monster Level Determination table!

Just for larfs, I'm going to randomly generate a monster encounter via the old DMG and see where it leads us in the Wegsworld. One side of the matrix references Dungeon Level, which I'm going to split halfway and say Level 8. The other side of the matrix is the Monster Level Table to consult...

Picking up my d20...

(Can't remember the last time I actually rolled one of these things...)

Rolling d20... 14!

This score leads us to Monster Level Table VI.

(thumbing through the DMG...)

Ok. Table VI. Percentile-driven (something I'm more comfortable with...).

Rolling d%... 46!

Manticore!

(thumbing through the Monster Manual...)

Manticore
Minion Level: Any, but usually 6/66 and 7/77.
Size: 4 SQR
Arketype: Ranger (Trickster+Warrior).
Possesses all Ranger + Warrior Attack Forms.
Possesses (d3) Blood Chips.

Special Actions
Each inning the manticore can attack twice as a Warrior (Attack+Attack) or once as Ranger (Aim+Fire).
Either counts as a single action.

Special Attacks

Strength+: Move Strength +4
A manticore possesses quick movement.

Clawed Attack: +ML Warrior Strength
The strength of the manticore's claw strikes is double its Minion Level.
A ML 5/55 has a Warrior Strength of 10 for each attack. Ouch!

Tail Spike Volley
Aim+Fire as same action. Range equals (3 x RS).
Target square suffer (4 x ML) wounds. All touching squares suffer (2 x ML) wounds. ARM% only for Invulnerability rolls. The manticore is allowed the Ranger point blank bonus. The manitcore has ML such attacks.

And that's this week's monster for ya!

Re-tooled the manticore from orig. posting.

As outdoor beasts, Ranger should be primary Arketype. If this was a trained pet of some Sage, it could be a Warrior or Trickster. The Kreator is free to mix it up as they need.

One new concept is the double action bonus. Basically, the manticore gets two Warrior attacks per attack, and can nest Aim+Fire for its tail volley. As it is not a Warrior by nature, it will be less effective for Prowess attacks (though its Claws wreak heavy D on the foe).

8/88 manticores should be rare! The double action bonus for ML 8/88 minions would make this thing a terror. Move + Action + Action would allow the beast four Warrior attacks per inning.

It is highly vulnerable to spell damage, but it's ranged attacks will allow it to stay the distance from the spellchuckers. It's quick Move Strength is a help there, too.

Time to find a group of Arks to send up against it!

Looks interesting. I'd probably give full INV% but that's more of a 3.x style thing (just about every aoe in 3.x and 4e gives a high reliance on dex/speed).

Wilcoxon - since it is an attack on the square and not the Ark directly, I think Arm% only is fair. Stealth Rank implies that your Ark is dodging the attack, it is hard to dodge a cloud of tail spikes! You could give each Ark an Act Fast! to jump one square away (reducing a 4 x ML to a 2 x ML and a 2 x ML to no damage). But that's only if you are feeling generous!

Looking forward to throwing down a Manticore!

Tail spikes ain't all that bad!

As the damage is a set base x ML, the damage is limited.

For an 8/88, a direct hit does 32 Wounds and periphery does half that (16 Wounds).

Act Fast! would work nice to level down damage.

Players should have option to take ARM% test or Act Fast!
