From page 174 of the
AD&D Dungeon Masters Guide (1979), the awesomely named
Dungeon Random Monster Level Determination table!
Just for larfs, I'm going to randomly generate a monster encounter via the old DMG and see where it leads us in the Wegsworld. One side of the matrix references
Dungeon Level, which I'm going to split halfway and say
Level 8. The other side of the matrix is the
Monster Level Table to consult...
Picking up my d20...
(Can't remember the last time I actually rolled one of these things...)
Rolling d20... 14!
This score leads us to
Monster Level Table VI.
(thumbing through the
DMG...)
Ok. Table VI. Percentile-driven (something I'm more comfortable with...).
Rolling d%... 46!
Manticore!
(thumbing through the
Monster Manual...)
ManticoreMinion Level: Any, but usually 6/66 and 7/77.
Size: 4 SQR
Arketype: Ranger (Trickster+Warrior).
Possesses all Ranger + Warrior Attack Forms.
Possesses (d3) Blood Chips.
Special ActionsEach inning the manticore can attack twice as a Warrior (Attack+Attack) or once as Ranger (Aim+Fire).
Either counts as a single action.
Special AttacksStrength+: Move Strength +4
A manticore possesses quick movement.
Clawed Attack: +ML Warrior Strength
The strength of the manticore's claw strikes is double its Minion Level.
A ML 5/55 has a Warrior Strength of 10 for each attack. Ouch!
Tail Spike Volley
Aim+Fire as same action. Range equals (3 x RS).
Target square suffer (4 x ML) wounds. All touching squares suffer (2 x ML) wounds. ARM% only for Invulnerability rolls. The manticore is allowed the Ranger point blank bonus. The manitcore has ML such attacks.
And that's this week's monster for ya!
